Whispering Roses

Whispering Roses (Murmura Rossa) are darkness-inhibiting rosaceous flowers encountered all around Ærria. Whispering Roses are silver-white in colour and grow in networks of uninterrupted vines.

One of the most distinct characteristics of Whispering Roses is their ability to record emotionally-charged sounds and fragmentary lines of dialogue. Once recorded, the roses will whisper the message down the chain, from one petalled-mouth to the next, in a twisted game version of “Broken Telephone” or “Chinese Whispers”.

Given their uncanny ability to swiftly pass on information across continents, Whispering Roses are widely employed in strategic surveillance and information gathering tasks. Roots of Whispering Roses contain a powerful analgesic similar to morphine and are often used in Alarian medicine to treat both acute and chronic severe pain.

Whispering Roses are wrongly described as “white, glow-in-the-dark” flowers, when in fact their special pigment, arrestis lumene, merely absorb the surrounding darkness. Because of their darkness-inhibiting properties, they have become associated with darkness and death. Whispering Roses symbolize the Journey of the Soul as it ventures beyond pain and darkness, into the immaterial reality of Inexistence. Together with funeral shrouds and burning pyres, Whispering Roses are customary representations of traditional Alarian funerals.
